Activities

As befits a region which is so varied, the activities available are equally varied.

Despite being a relatively hilly region, cycling is surprisingly popular throughout most of the year. Motorcyclists are attracted by the windy roads in the hillier parts of the region.

Although generally not widely publicised, there are innumerable festivals throughout the year such as these at Tautavel and Maury.

As it's France, you can both learn French and taste the wines, or indeed combine both.

The two tourist trains of the region offer two quite different experiences with the Train Jaune (detailed article) taking you into the mountains throughout the year whilst the red train takes you through the rolling hills of the Fenouilledes in the summer. The many stops along the route of the Train Jaune make it a popular journey for hikers. There is little to see or so in Latour and, aside from the small station café, nowhere within reasonable walking distance to eat.

As befits a Mediterranean coastline, beach resorts abound from the relatively quiet Canet Plage near Perpignan to the lively Banyuls-sur-Mer near to the Spanish border.

For a more cultural activity there is the former home of Matisse in Collioure or a number of museums such as that at Tautavel where the 450,000 year old Tautavel Man was discovered.

The Canal du Midi opens up a whole range of possibilities from just watching the boats go by to piloting one yourself through the many lovely villages such as Beziers and Le Soler along the banks of the canal.
